How Skin Ages

Just like every other part of your body, skin grows older by the minute. Although the aging can’t be stopped, there are options for slowing the process and reduce signs of premature aging.

Dermatologists separate the aging of skin into two distinct types. Intrinsic (internal) aging, which is completely related to genetic factors, and Extrinsic (external) aging, which is caused by environmental factors such as exposure to UV rays.

Intrinsic Aging

Intrinsic aging is the natural aging process that usually begins in the mid-20’s. Your body begins to produce less collagen and elastin, the substance that keeps skin in place, becomes less and less effective. Dead skin is not shed as quickly, and new cells regenerate more slowly.

Your genes are responsible for the level of intrinsic aging your skin will go through. Some people will notice spots and wrinkles long before others. The most common signs of intrinsic aging are:

  • Thinner skin
  • Saggy skin
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Spots

Extrinsic Aging

Unlike intrinsic aging, the external factors of extrinsic aging are more or less under your control. These factors work together to prematurely age your skin. They may include:

  • Exposure to the sun
  • Stress levels
  • Medical conditions
  • Diet
  • Physical activity
  • Lifestyle choices such as smoking or drinking
  • Sleeping positions
  • Repetitive facial expressions
